“Is this the only map we have?” she asked confidently, fingering the aged, crumbling parchment and choosing to ignore Wil’s concern that she may not be ready. “It might help if I can see the route we’re taking.”
Jake shuffled through the rolled-up maps under his arm and produced one that showed a route from the center of Fallada’s forest, out to Mollac. He spread it out over the first one and allowed Jocylene to look to her heart’s content. Anticipation swelled between the three as they watched her, her green eyes tracing the path. She traced her slender fingers over the depicted forest, over the damp, dank moors that stretched on for miles and miles once one reached the end of the kindgom’s wooded center. She paused at the border, where the ground level entrance to Skel’gar was depicted, right at the foot of Mollac’s snow-peaked mountains. She nodded confidently and stood.
“I can do it,” she said. “Which way is west?” she asked.
Rothatin stood, his limbs screaming in protest as blood rushed down to his legs after being in a crouched position for so long. He walked to her side and grasped her shoulders gently, turning her in the right direction. She murmured her thanks and knelt on the dew-dampened ground beside him. Rothatin watched as she placed her hands on the earth, her fingers sinking into the soil. Her head snapped up, her eyes fixed on the horizon as she seemed to lock on to something in the distance.
Rothatin was drawn to the ground beside her, his brow wrinkled as astonishment stole his breath away. The soft shade of brown rimming the green irises of her eyes began seeping in to mingle with the stunningly mossy color. The deep brown veins shot through toward her dilated pupils as she curled her fingers in the earth, seeming to strain and pull on every ounce of her power until her arms trembled. Rothatin leaned in unconsciously, pulled in by a force foreign to him, gripping him by the soul. The vibrations of the ground beneath him seemed to rattle him to his bones.
Then all at once, it was gone. She exhaled and slumped forward, hanging her head. Her shoulders shook with frustration as she grunted and pounded the earth with her fists. When she looked up to meet his gaze, her eyes had returned to their normal leafy green hue.
“I can’t,” she whispered, as if shocked by that realization. “I thought I had it, but I—”
He gripped her hand tightly in his and forced it back to the ground, his teeth clenched in determination. He couldn’t bear the look of doubt in her eyes.
“No,” he said, a bit more forcefully than he intended. She flinched as his hand clenched around hers too tightly. Earth and leaves intertwined between their joined fingers. “You can. You can!”
She trembled as he shouted the last word, emphasizing it by thrusting her fingers even further into the soft ground. Then her chin raised a few inches and she nodded.
